The Nursery Nook - How to add some sweetness to any little corner of space (Part 1)

It is hard to believe I am in my third trimester with baby #3!  I finally managed to get this blog up and running before getting pregnant and then was hit hard with morning sickness for all of my first trimester and into my second.  Not lovely and definitely not a good time to be tackling DIY projects.  I mostly laid on the couch, cuddled my kiddos and ate potatoes or any carb I could keep down.

Now that I am somewhat on the other side of my morning sickness boy have I had a lot to catch up on especially when it came to our nursery or as we like to call it the nursery nook.

We have an extra room the baby could go in but at the moment it is my husbands office, he loves having his own space and seriously he needs it otherwise my whole house would be overtaken by books.  I've come to learn as a parent with two kids, that babies, well, they don't take up much space and you often don't use a dedicated room for them at first.  So since we have a pretty big master bedroom, we decided to turn a small section into a more dedicated nursery area and so far, so good!

Now, I love to decorate and I especially love kids spaces and I am pregnant which means nesting is full on at the moment.  With both of my other kids rooms I did a few DIY pieces but purchased A LOT!  Custom art, bedding, pillows etc.  As you can imagine with babe #3 funds are  limited so I became determined to DIY everything in our little nook so thus began a whirlwind of DIY projects which I will post here for your viewing pleasure.

Firstly - Wall vinyl
I make and sell wall vinyl decals and so it just made sense to liven up the tiny wall between our chair and baby dresser (in the closet) by adding a little something something in the form of vinyl decals.  This is a very easy and fairly inexpensive way to make any space more fun and I think especially looks great in kids rooms.  I wanted something fairly simple, gender neutral as we are team green and geometric.  Once we got these up - which I will admit take some time and patience and as I suggest in my instruction sheet a celebratory glass of wine when you are finished - a woodsy/mountain theme registered and my creative juices started flowing. Here is the vinyl wall half complete and I love it, doesn't seem odd in our master bedroom and really separates this tiny space making it one step closer to welcoming a tiny person. I'll end here as this post is already too long, stayed tuned for the next nursery project and if are on the hunt for some wall decals be sure to let me know or check out my Etsy site.

Happy DIYing!

Let's start at the beginning...

Creativity 101:

I envy the creative folks who can target and hone in their talent and produce beautiful and affirming results.  Sure, there is process, growth and change but there is also a sense of accomplishment and trust in knowing ones art.  I remember saying to a friend of mine in high school that I am a mediocre artist.  This was not meant to be a negative but rather a positive.  I seemed to never be amazing in any one art form but quite good at many.  This however left me feeling somewhat dissatisfied as an artist.  It has taken years to feel comfortable in this, having such an urge to create yet never feeling completely at home with any one discipline.  I went to art school, took photography, theatre, film, music courses and loved every moment.  Not everyone can take Indonesian Puppetry and African Drumming in one semester (Note: I’m not sure how my parents felt about my degree but I sure can guess).  I graduated and entered the real world, was married and have now carved out a good little career in corporate event planning for myself.  Am I creative in my career?  Absolutely! I have learned the art of flower arranging, design and those extra special touches which make a great event.  But it’s not really enough to satisfy my creativity craving and I’ve learned over the years  creativity comes out of those who are creative in everything they do.

DIY’ing 101:

These days my creativity spills out through my DIY projects and you know what, it’s my jam!  I am pretty darn good at DIY’ing and I love it!  The best part, which fits me to a glove, is that it is an ever changing form of creativity.  I never get bored!  I have been told to find a specific niche and stick with it.  To master a product and sell it. But I can’t, it’s just not me and it gets too boring!  I really like a little bit of column A, and a little bit of column B, I am good with that and that's my niche.

Stuff She DIYs:

So what is this Stuff She DIYs stuff all about anyway?  Well the name says it all.  It’s what I’m up to in the DIY world.  Many projects can be found for sale on my Etsy site for those of you who are not the DIY’ing type.  I also sell regularly out of a few local artisan stores around the GTA and my husband is a great delivery boy :).  I love custom orders as well so feel free to contact me if you have something in mind! I post as regularly as I can to Instagram - I do have 2 kiddo's and one on the way (Oh my!) so they keep me fairly busy.  In between my life as a mum, wife, event planner and everything in between I can be found doing what I love which is DIYing so follow me and come along for the ride!
